Stand-up is booming, and the numbers prove it

Five years ago you could count the country's paying comedy nights on one hand. Today there's a room running somewhere in Harare or Bulawayo most nights of the week, and the data we see on ticket sales says the growth isn't slowing.

What's striking is the shape of it. Comedy audiences book later than music audiences — a huge share of tickets sell in the final forty-eight hours — but they convert at a higher rate once they land on the page. People decide to laugh on short notice, and they rarely abandon the cart.

The economics still favour volume over price. The healthiest nights run frequent, affordable shows and build a following, rather than a rare expensive special. The comics who treat it as a weekly habit, not an event, are the ones turning it into a living.

It's a young scene that has quietly become a real one. The next step — touring between cities on the strength of a name alone — is starting to look less like a dream and more like a calendar.
