From open mic to main stage: Bulawayo's comedy pipeline
At The Bag, Tuesday nights are where the city's next headliners are made. We spent a season watching them rise.

Every Tuesday at The Bag, a sign-up sheet goes on the bar at seven and is full by ten past. The room is small, the lights are unforgiving, and the rule is simple: five minutes, then the next name. It is, by a distance, the most important comedy night in Bulawayo — and almost nobody outside the city knows it exists.
What makes it matter is the ladder. A strong five minutes earns you a regular ten. A regular ten that lands gets you a slot on a Friday showcase, which sells tickets, which is the first time most of these comedians see their name on a bill that costs money to attend.
We followed three of them across a season. One went from a nervous debut to closing a weekend showcase. One found a bit that worked and rode it a little too long. One quit, came back, and got better for the gap.
The economics are humbling and honest. A packed showcase might pay each act enough for a tank of fuel and a good week. The point isn't the money yet — it's the reps, the room, and the slow accumulation of nights that didn't go badly.
Watch the rooms, not the algorithm, the veterans here will tell you. The next person to sell out a Bulawayo theatre is, right now, holding a sign-up pen on a Tuesday, waiting for their five minutes.

Sharing this with our whole organising team. The bit about saying yes to demand quickly is exactly the lesson we learned the hard way.

Same here. We almost missed a second show date because we hesitated for a week.

The hard way is the only way some of us learn it, apparently 😅

Great read. One thing I'd add: the same logic applies to smaller towns, the window is just shorter.

The payment step part hits home. We lost so many sales before simplifying checkout — wish I'd read this a year ago.
