The Johannesburg Art Fair returns this month, and for the first time the programme spills well beyond the main hall. Satellite shows in three city neighbourhoods, a late-night opening, and a dedicated section for galleries showing for the first time all point to a fair trying to feel less like a trade event and more like a city-wide weekend.

For visitors, that's both the appeal and the challenge. There's more to see than a single afternoon allows, so the organisers have leaned into timed, themed routes — a morning of established galleries, an evening of emerging work — rather than one undifferentiated ticket.

The commercial side is quietly healthy. Mid-tier galleries report that the fair's audience now buys, not just browses, and several have built their year's calendar around the weekend.

If you're going, go with a plan and leave room to abandon it. The best things at a fair this size are usually the rooms you wandered into by mistake.
